Who we are

Acari Records is the first label specialized in the most important genre of Brazilian instrumental music – Choro.

With head office in Rio de Janeiro – city where choro was born approximately 140 years ago –, the company was created in 1999 by the musicians Mauricio Carrilho and Luciana Rabello and by the producer João Carlos Carino aiming at showing the music of the genre’s major composers and performers. Artists that have been, throughout the whole country and in many periods, contributing with the construction of collective, exquisite and grand works.

In a research carried out through the major public and private archives of Rio de Janeiro, we’ve counted over 1300 composers born until 1900, responsible for a repertoire with approximately 8000 titles – among polkas, schottisches, quadrilles and every other genre that compose the Choro universe. From this historical ballast, Acari consolidates its presence in the market by releasing CDs in which the works of historic composers are recorded, while it also dedicates special attention to the repertoire of contemporary authors whose production shows itself attuned to the translation of its time.

Besides the production of CDs, Acari – which is also a publisher – also dedicates to publishing scores, with profiles of the composers, pictures and historical information, not only for musicians and researchers, but also for the lovers of the genre.

The word Acari is of Tupi origin and is the name of a fish of freshwater, responsible for keeping the rivers clean. On the fringe of the disposable that floods our cultural industry, Acari Records brings within its course an inexhaustible source of creativity.
